Walks Programme

Help!

We are still looking for more members to lead walks, both long and short distances. Any of the experienced walk leaders will be happy to give you help if you need a little confidence to get started.

All walks have a short break, the longer walks a short break plus up to half an hour for lunch. The average pace of the medium walks is 2 miles per hour and the long 2.5 to 3 miles per hour but this can vary with the terrain and at the discretion of the leader. The longer walks tend to be faster paced than the shorter ones.

We would like to encourage more people to car share and some of the walks accommodate this by suggesting meeting up at a specific point. Also consider contacting people who live near you to arrange a lift.

For those walkers who like to use public transport please note that if 3 (up to 9) people travel together on a train they may be eligible for a group discount. For "bus" walks contact the walk leader to confirm bus times. Also please check bus shelter for alterations to schedules.

Incidents on walks

Groups are invited to note the following recommendations:

  • The leader and back marker should always carry a map so that the emergency services can be given accurate directions in the event of an incident.
  • Ensure that the back marker can contact the leader in the event of an incident. It will also be helpful if the leader has an emergency first aid kit in case of trips.

You can also click on the leader's name in the programme below to see their mobile phone number (if it is available). Further contact details, such as landline numbers, are available in the printed and emailed versions of the programme.

If you intend to join a walk in extreme weather conditions, please check with the leader before setting out, to save an unnecessary journey.

Come for a gentle, mostly flat stroll around the new SANGS (Suitable Accessible Natural Green Space) at Arborfield, past the 112 year old Sergeant's Mess and a nose around the SDL (Strategic Development Location) partly competed "behind the wire" at Arborfield Garrison, which includes a beautiful wildlife lake. Take A330 for approximately 1 mile, turn left at the end of a long wall alongside the green, park at the end.

Some stiles and a few fairly demanding up and downs but the views are worth the effort. Start point where the roads form a triangle on the map. We were too early in 2016 and they were past their best last year. This year? Que sera sera. Start from the National Trust parking area off Cannon Lane. GR . Take the A4 in the direction of Maidenhead over the A404, turn right at the next roundabout, drop down under the A404, up to the mini roundabout and almost complete turn into entrance of the car park.

Meet in the pay and display car park in Recreation Road (behind the Co-op). GR . If coming by bus get the no. 17 from Reading to "The Victoria". At the end of the walk there is a choice of 2 buses, either the no. 15 or no. 33 into town or the no. 33 back to Tilehurst or to collect your car if left in the car park.

This is another section of the Capital Ring and has ups and downs but there are adequate opportunities to take a tea break or refreshment on the way. Please be prepared for a long day! Meet at Reading Station at 0925 hours with a packed lunch having purchased an off-peak travel card to London zones 1-6. 4.5 miles Kathy Dunne & Mike Newman A gentle paced walk from Wokingham to peaceful countryside and the Bramshill Forest. No hills! No stiles! Meet at Wokingham Library. GR . There is parking in Denmark Street behind the library, £1 on Sundays. Alternatively there is an X4 bus from St. Mary's Butts (stop CT) which leaves at 1000 hours, with stops en route, arriving at Wokingham Broad Street at 1028. Hence the later start.

7 miles Peter Francis This is a ride and stride. A train walk, going to Oxford. The walk follows the Thames path initially, then through some of the college grounds before crossing some of the attractive parks in the town. There is a glimpse of the river Cherwell; and hopefully the pavilion, in the University Parks will be open for a cup of tea. A short  walk through a residential area will bring us to the Oxford canal, where those who are weary can take a short cut back to the station (cutting off about 1 mile). For the more intrepid walker we will go on and cross Port Meadow in order to rejoin the Thames path. Please let Peter know if you are going to come and also if you have not got a rail card so that he can arrange a group discount on tickets. In order to get the best of the day please meet at Reading station by 0925.

Then a gradual climb back to the cars. Quite challenging, but we shall not be in a hurry. If you intend to partake of lunch, let Monica know a few days before, so she can warn the pub. Start from the car park on the left, at the top of the hill, about 1.5 miles south of Kingsclere on the B3051. GR .

This walk passes places D.H.Lawrence and Frieda knew well and several times it crosses the railway line they and their friends used before it was closed. Park on the road near "The Fox" public house, post code RG18 9RB, Hermitage, which is on the B4009, five miles north-east of Newbury. GR .

4.5 miles Kathy Dunne & Mike Newman An easy level walk with plenty of interest, starting this year along the Thames Path, with affluent properties on the far bank, into the grounds of Dorney Lake (remember the 2012 Olympics), on to Dorney with its Tudor houses and back to Dorney Common. Start from the car park at Dorney Common. GR . Directions: Take the A4 to the far side of Maidenhead, B3026 at roundabout to Dorney (ignore earlier sign to Dorney), over cattle grid onto the common, first right after the grid across the common. Car park is near the end of this road, on the right.

5 or 8 miles Ali Melabie & Chris Bintcliffe walker Our annual event welcoming the London Blind Rambling Club for a walk, starting in the village of Waltham St Lawrence and can be either 5 miles or 8+ miles in length, to enjoy in the surrounding countryside. Park and meet by the church in the centre of this old village. GR . We need volunteers to help guide our guests and also for ferrying to and from the station. The walkers will be picked up from Twyford Railway Station prior to the walk. If you have a car available please advise Ali.
